Monthly Apprise|December 2019

Welcome to my first Monthly Apprise! If you’re wondering what apprise means, I got you covered. It’s just a fancy synonym that I looked up in the thesaurus two minutes ago so I could be ~original~ and, like, the smartest. Basically, these posts are going to be monthly updates about anything that I wanted to update my three readers (hi Madeline, Vivian, and Jordan) on about what’s happenin’ in my oh-so-glamorous life, so stay tuned if you would like to be “in the know” about the ~influencer~ nobody knows about!

What I’m Listening to:

  • “All I Want For Christmas Is You”- Mariah Carey
    • This is, by far, the best and most iconic Christmas song, and it will be forever. Try to convince me otherwise.
  •  “The Christmas Song”- Nat King Cole
    • Ah, this song is a classic. It’s jazzy yet muted, happy yet somber, and an oldie but goodie.
  • “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”- Michael Bublé
    • Michael Bublé comes out of hibernation just in time for Christmas, so yeah.
  • “Rockin’ Around the Pole” -Mean Girls on Broadway (feat. Erika Henningsen, Taylor Louderman, Ashley Park, and Kate Rockwell)
    • This song is hilarious. The title perfectly explains the mood- it’s just a good time. Also, as far as I’m concerned, everything these ladies do is nothing short of great, and this isn’t an exception.

What I’m Watching:

  • Netflix’s A Christmas Prince (gave me anxiety), A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding (kind of a letdown), A Christmas Inheritance (Pete from The Office is in it), and The Princess Switch (highly recommend)
  • DWTS Junior– I’m rooting for Sage and Mackenzie (don’t @ me)
  • The Good Place– “D’arcy Caden needs all the awards”- my friend Vivian
  • Jess Medley on YouTube- Jess is an MT major who vlogs her daily life which is super interesting and theatre-y. I came across her channel by her video “I’m Playing ANYA in ANASTASIA” and was instantly hooked. Go check her out!

What I’m Singing:

  • A.V.E .(advanced vocal ensemble)- P.D.Q. Bach’s “Good King Kong Looked Out,” “Throw the Yule Log on Uncle John,” and “O Little Town of Hackensack” in addition to “Christmas The World Around,” “African Noel,” and traditional Christmas carols for our school’s annual Christmas concert.
  • How to Succeed– We haven’t started rehearsal yet, but I still have “Heart of Gold,” “Company Way,” and “Brotherhood of Man” stuck in my head from auditions.

What I’m Eating:

  • Homemade Chai Tea Latte- ok, so technically this is a drink, but “what I’m consuming” just doesn’t have the same ring to it. Anyways, every morning before I go to the train station I make myself some tea, and recently I’ve been obsessed with the Christmassy vibe chai gives off. I pour boiling water into a cute tumbler with my Bigelow vanilla chai tea bag, pop in a dash of half & half, pinch in a bit of sugar, and I’m out the door!
  • Walkers Shortbread- these Scottish staples are buttery goodness that pair exceptionally well with a homemade chai tea latte 😉

What I’m Doing:

  • Studying for Midterms- I have an English and a history midterm which doesn’t seem like a lot, but I still have regular classes and homework on top of it. Did I mention I only have 75 minutes to complete each exam?
  • Christmas Shopping-  I made a whole post about a few deals I found after Black Friday which I’ll link here, but I’ve done a little bit more shopping since then. I bought a cute mug and a beachy candle at TJ Maxx for one of my Secret Santas- I’m in quite a few of them this year- and I bought a ton of pretty and punny gift bags at Marshalls!
  • Prepping for Blogmas- So I totally dropped the ball and didn’t think to even do Blogmas, (I’m not even sure if it’s a thing for bloggers- ’cause I totally am one- or just a vlogger thing) but I have a solution! I may do the 12 Days of Christmas which technically goes from December 25- January 5, but I might alter it to be before Christmas so I can catch y’all up on some Christmas fun!

Audition Season!

It’s that time of year, folks, where already stressed out teenagers make themselves even more stressed by competing with each other for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to embody a character on a very far off-Broadway (one might even say high school auditorium) stage. We all know and love those categories of auditioners- from the one who’s been preparing since the last show ended to the one who learns the audition material a week before (me) to the one who tries to only do a dance audition but eventually forces themselves to do a singing one too because it showcases your variety of talents for future productions (also me).

This year, one of my school’s brother school’s is doing How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and I think it was a really great choice. It’s almost as if the drama department was anticipating the new testing calendar and thought “you know what could be fun? Letting the students do a show they can apply to their school lives!” because let’s face it, the trying period takes a brief hiatus between November 20 until January 5. Anyways, it’s also a great choice because of the large cast size and ensemble. The musical family really grew last year which was not what the directors were expecting- especially after choosing Into The Woods which is not exactly ensemble-heavy.

I always procrastinate when preparing for auditions just because I know I’m not going to get a role since I’m an underclassman. Last year, my English teacher gave me Emily’s monologue from Our Town which I honestly did not know how to act out. It was on the darker side yet it was reminiscent, and it was classical which really threw me for a loop. I just did my (kinda) best and then sang “Once Upon a December” from Anastasia because I knew that music suited my voice the best. My audition was okay, but I was also a scared, nervous little Freshman who really did not want a role but forced herself to get over her audition anxiety and just do it. In the end, I was a featured dancer which was absolutely perfect for me and I really enjoyed and learned a lot about theatre last season.

This year, I was determined to show the panel that I could not only dance, but sing and act as well. In order to do that, I had to use my time wisely and start practicing. Shockingly, a conflict arose! Now, we were given very specific cuts of each song (two for the regular audition and one for callbacks) because this year they decided to try out having everyone sing the same songs. The lovely music director made a google folder which contained the sheet music of the specific cuts as well as a piano recording of each vocal part, accompaniment, and later, audition track. As a person who doesn’t play piano or read music, the second I clicked on the recording entitled “Soprano/Alto vocal part” I was lost as to where the words went. My mom tried to help me as well but in the end, she called her colleague and asked if she would be willing to help me with my audition repertoire (she thankfully said yes) which brings us to the next week- AKA the week before auditions.

I had three thirty-minute voice lessons in which she taught me where the words go with the music, how to actually sing the song correctly, and how to use supporting and breathing techniques in these songs- I probably should’ve mentioned this by now, but I was auditioning for Smitty and the two audition songs were “Heart of Gold” and “Company Way” and the callback song was “Brotherhood of Man” (all my material- including monologue- was from the show). Anyways, I had really come a long way by the end of the week and I was really starting to have confidence in myself- not to mention my mirror was rather impressed by my theatrics.

The days leading up to the audition, I was feeling pretty great about myself and what I had prepared. I knew that I really had to showcase my personality and make the songs my own, especially since everyone else was singing the same thing. I decided to channel Smitty’s sass and act a little bit sarcastic, realistic, and in-the-know, almost as if the audience and I knew a secret the rest of the characters didn’t know. As an actual person, I really am like Smitty, and I tend to gravitate towards characters who are like me as I am more comfortable in my own skin than someone else’s. For “Company Way,” I really acted that one out. To a whole other level, some would say. I mean, I had the hand gestures, the energy, the pizazz, the personality in my voice. I only fell short holding out that last note, (which I can do, but I ran out of breath because I was nervous) but that’s water under the bridge. As for “Heart of Gold,” I sang that a little less sweet and a little more knowingly (if that even makes sense). Also, my monologue was pretty dang good if I do say so myself.

I didn’t get a callback, which I was fine with because although I thought I could have gotten one, the only girls who received callbacks were new Sophomores and Juniors, and only a few Seniors, so I took that as a sign that they just wanted to assess the new talent.

The cast list just came out yesterday, and I’m a featured dancer again! Of course, there’s always tea and tears when a cast list comes out, but in my opinion, one shouldn’t take it too hard, especially if they’re underclassmen. It sounds harsh, but there are really slim chances of getting a role as an underclassman, no matter how good you are, because of seniority. I don’t really take cast lists too seriously, and I find it almost silly when people waste their tears on something that’s going to dictate the next three months of their lives. I mean, it’s a high school production that you probably won’t remember in the long run, so what’s it to ya? I understand it can be disappointing, but that’s a huge part of this industry, and eventually, you just have to accept it.

All in all, that was the best audition I’ve ever done, and I was really proud of myself for finally realizing that even though I probably don’t have a shot at a role this year, I’m really auditioning to prove myself worthy for more responsibility during How to Succeed and future shows.

The Aftermath of Black Friday

I’ve never done Black Friday before. I have mixed emotions about this because, on the one hand, I get to sleep and not stress at 3 o’clock in the morning. On the other hand, Black Friday seems like a rite of passage in every shopper’s life that I have yet to experience. Next year when I (hopefully) have my drivers license, the population of Connecticut better watch out because I will be getting those steals and deals faster than a hipster can say green juice.

Although I didn’t shop on Black Friday, this year it seemed that stores had extended their promotions through Cyber Monday which worked out very well in my favor. Everything I bought was at least 40%, if not more. I refuse to pay full price for nearly anything which really saved my wallet when I went shopping on Saturday for Christmas gifts (!) with my best friends.

Our first stop was Hollister, where I got a summery black and white gingham dress because it was 50% and my mom refuses to buy me more dresses (yes, that was my internal and external justification). Sadly this item is no longer available, but I’ll link some similar styles down below. My best friend Madeline bought a trendy white tee with rainbow stripes on the front which sadly was excluded from the store promotion, but was so cheap that she bought it anyways.

Next, we went into Sephora where I bought a skincare Christmas Cracker for one of my friends which included a nose mask, face mask, eye mask, and hand cream, all for $10! Madeline bought me a Bite Beauty agave lip set (the only reason I know what it is is because she asked me what I wanted and if she could just buy it right there) which was only $12. Sephora was really comin’ through with the deals.

We made a quick stop at LUSH so I could pick up a mini bottle of Dirty Springwash shower gel as a gift my mom because it’s her all-time favorite scent which was about $10. I also got her a sample of the Christingle body conditioner which has a similar smell to Dirty. My other best friend Vivian bought her Secret Santa the Buttercup gift set which contains two classic bath bombs and cost $15.95. Although LUSH wasn’t on sale, their products are generally affordable and a crowd favorite (just like jazz squares!)

The last store I bought anything at in the mall was Francesca’s, and may I just say, I did not know how expensive a pack of velvet scrunchies were before that moment. Frankly, I was a lil’ bit shocked and had a bit of trouble taking out $15 for three scrunchies, but nevertheless, I persisted. Also, a pack of velvet scrunchies was the only thing my Secret Santa asked for so I felt compelled to buy them for her since they were in the price limit.

Some other stores we ventured into include Forever 21 which is not my vibe (subscribe to Joel&Lia #notspon), American Eagle (kinda okay but whoever was controlling that playlist needs to talk to someone, stat), Target (I love this store but we were too tired to care to look), and H&M (again, the scrunchie prices were outrageous, I just don’t get it- I’ll never get it).

Around 5 or 6, my mom and I went to Marshalls for some sister steals and I found so. many. gifts. I bought two Kate Spade tumblers for $10 dollars each, a pack of three Kate Spade socks for $10, three Lollia hand cremes for $2.99 each, and a pack of three fuzzy socks for $4.99. These gifts were for my aunt, her daughter, and a white elephant party I’m going to in a few weeks.

Needless to say, I don’t have a dollar to my name now, but I did get a ton of amazing deals which was great for me because I’m a bargain-hunter when I do shop (which includes Christmas, birthdays, and Broadway shows). I hope this Black Friday update was interesting/helpful/insightful/I ran out of adjectives, therefore, this is the end of the post so bye!

About Me

Hello and welcome to my blog! I’m Jillian (Jill for short) and I love theatre, fashion, and writing. I’m a Sophomore in high school and my favorite subjects are English and history. For fun, I do three to four musicals a year, write songs and plays, watch all the theatre I can, and online shop with no intention of buying anything because I am sadly not a member of the 1% (shocking, I know). Hopefully, you’ll enjoy watching me dance through life (and make constant musical references!)
